How We Can Help You

Your first appointment with Luxury Psychiatry Clinic is always held in person at our Chicago, Illinois or Winter Garden, Florida office. Knowing that ahead of time helps you plan and reflects how we approach care. The initial visit is about your provider genuinely getting to know you, which happens best face-to-face.

During this appointment, your provider takes time to understand your symptoms, your medical history and mental health history, what you’ve tried before, and what you’re hoping mental health treatment will accomplish. It’s a conversation, not a test, and there’s nothing you need to rehearse.

How to Prepare for Your First Psychiatry Appointment

A little preparation makes your first appointment more productive and takes some of the uncertainty out of the visit. You don’t need to arrive with everything figured out because that’s what the appointment is for, but a few simple steps help your provider get an accurate picture from the start.

What to Bring With You

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and any completed intake forms if you received them ahead of your visit. A list of your current medications is especially helpful, including dosages, along with any medications you’ve tried in the past and how they worked for you.

If you have relevant medical records, previous psychiatric evaluations, or recent lab work, bring those too. These additional records aren’t always necessary, but they can give your provider useful context and save time during the appointment.

Think About Your Symptoms and Treatment Goals

Before your visit, spend a few minutes reflecting on what’s been going on. When did your symptoms start? What makes them better or worse? How are they affecting your work, relationships, sleep, or daily routine? Jotting down notes is a good idea, since it’s easy to forget details in the moment. It also helps to think about what you want from treatment, whether that’s relief from specific symptoms, a clearer diagnosis, a medication review, or simply understanding yourself better.

There are no wrong answers, and your goals can change, but naming them gives your provider a clear starting point.

"Feel beautiful on the inside and out"

Dr. Dees and her team of skilled psychiatric nurse practitioners are happy to take the time to get to know their patients, in order to find the appropriate diagnoses and means of treatment.

What Happens During Your First Psychiatry Appointment?

The first appointment is a comprehensive evaluation, which is a structured conversation between you and your provider. It typically runs longer than a standard follow-up visit because there’s more to cover. Your provider’s goal is to understand you well enough to make an accurate assessment and recommend a treatment plan that fits, and that takes real information. Here’s how the visit generally unfolds.

Discussing Your Symptoms and Concerns

A lot of the appointment focuses on what brought you in. Your provider will ask about the symptoms you’ve been experiencing, when they started, how often they occur, and how they affect your daily life, including work, relationships, and sleep. Expect questions about mood, anxiety, energy, concentration, and appetite, even if some don’t seem related to your main concern; they help your provider see the whole picture. Answer as honestly as you can. There’s no benefit to minimizing what’s happening, and providers aren’t there to judge. The more accurate the information, the more accurate the assessment.

Reviewing Your Medical and Mental Health History

Your provider will also review your broader health history, since physical and mental health are closely connected. This includes past or current medical conditions, previous mental health diagnoses, hospitalizations if any, and significant life experiences that may be relevant, including trauma. You control how much detail you share, especially at a first visit. If a topic feels too difficult to discuss right away, say so; that’s completely acceptable, and it can be revisited when you’re ready.

Medications, Previous Treatments, and Family History

Finally, your provider will go over the medications you currently take and anything you’ve tried before. Knowing what helped, what didn’t, and what caused side effects prevents repeating approaches that already failed. You’ll also be asked about family history of mental health conditions, because genetics can play a role in some mental health conditions, and that context can inform both diagnosis and treatment decisions. Together, these details give your provider what they need to start building your plan.

Mental Health Screenings We May Use

As part of your evaluation, your provider may ask you to complete one or more brief screening questionnaires. These are standardized tools used throughout psychiatry to measure symptoms consistently, and they usually take just a few minutes each. These screenings support the psychiatric evaluation, but they are not diagnoses by themselves. A score suggests where to look more closely. Your provider interprets the results in the context of everything else you’ve discussed, and they may also be repeated over time to track how you’re responding to treatment.

PHQ-9 for Depression

The PHQ-9 is a nine-question screening for depression. It asks how often you’ve experienced symptoms like low mood, loss of interest, sleep changes, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating over the past two weeks. Scores help indicate whether depressive symptoms are mild, moderate, or severe, and give your provider a baseline to measure progress against.

You can find and download our PHQ-9 Form here.

GAD-7 for Anxiety

The GAD-7 is a seven-question tool focused on anxiety disorders. It covers symptoms like persistent worry, restlessness, irritability, and trouble relaxing. Like the PHQ-9, it produces a severity score that helps your provider gauge how much anxiety is affecting your life.

MDQ for Bipolar Disorder

The Mood Disorder Questionnaire screens for a history of manic or hypomanic symptoms, such as periods of unusually elevated energy, reduced need for sleep, or racing thoughts. This is important because bipolar disorder is sometimes mistaken for depression, and the distinction significantly changes treatment.

ASRS v1.1 for ADHD

The Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale asks about attention, organization, restlessness, and related symptoms in adulthood. It helps identify whether a fuller ADHD assessment is warranted, particularly since adult ADHD often goes unrecognized or gets mislabeled as anxiety or a motivation problem.

Will I Receive a Diagnosis or Medication at My First Appointment?

Sometimes, but not always, and it depends on your situation. Some patients leave the first appointment with a clear diagnosis and a prescription. Others need additional sessions, records from previous providers, or further assessment before anything is settled. The goal of the first appointment is an accurate understanding of what’s going on, and rushing that process serves no one.

Receiving a Mental Health Diagnosis

If your symptoms and history point clearly to a specific condition, your provider may share a diagnosis at the first visit and explain what it means. In other cases, the picture is less immediate. Mental health conditions like bipolar disorder, ADHD, and BPD can resemble one another or overlap with depression and anxiety, and distinguishing them sometimes takes more than one conversation. When that’s the case, your provider will tell you what they’re considering and what information would help clarify things.

Discussing Medication and Other Treatment Options

If medication is appropriate, your provider may prescribe it at the first appointment, along with a clear explanation of what it’s for, how long it takes to work, and what side effects to watch for. Medication isn’t automatic, though. Depending on your needs, the recommendation may be therapy sessions, lifestyle changes, further evaluation, or some combination. If you do start a medication, expect a follow-up within a few weeks to check how it’s working and adjust if needed.

Creating Your Personalized Treatment Plan

By the end of your evaluation, your provider will begin outlining a treatment plan built around your symptoms, history, and goals. This is a collaborative step that will be discussed with you. Your provider will explain what they recommend and why, and you’ll have the chance to ask questions, raise concerns, and share what feels realistic for your life. Treatment plans also aren’t fixed. As your provider learns what works for you, the plan gets adjusted, which is a normal and expected part of psychiatric care.

Follow-Up Visits and Monitoring Your Progress

Follow-up appointments are usually shorter than the initial evaluation and focus on how you’re responding to treatment. The mental health professional you speak with will check your symptoms, review any side effects, and adjust your plan as needed. Although initial psychiatric appointments are in-person visits, certain follow-up appointments may be available through telehealth depending on your needs and location, which many patients find easier to fit into their schedules.
