Luxury Psychiatry Clinic offers psychiatric treatment and therapy services for veterans in Chicago & Orlando

Leaving military service brings more changes than most people realize. Many veterans deal with memories and emotions that people simply don’t encounter in civilian life. Coming home from long deployments and dealing with sudden changes in surroundings can shape how service members think and feel. Because life in the military comes with strict demands, unique values, and powerful bonds, ordinary mental health support doesn’t always fit. Counseling and psychiatric services designed for veterans take experiences like these into account.

At our clinic, we’ll always ensure your background is taken into account when designing your treatment plan. We provide compassionate professional care at both our Chicago and Orlando locations, and we are happy to help you take the next step in your life.

Understanding the Mental Health Challenges Veterans Face

Transitioning from military life isn’t easy, and mental health problems can come up and stick around long after service is over. Examples of these mental health concerns include:

Anxiety, Depression, and Mood Disorders

Sometimes sadness, fear, and hopelessness continue, even when everyday life appears calm at the surface. Mood swings may occur, sometimes without any obvious trigger. Veterans may also have difficulty motivating themselves to spend time with friends and family members.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Trauma Exposure

Serving in active duty often means facing dangers and losses that stick with a person for a very long time, sometimes forever. It’s not unusual for veterans to experience flashbacks, nightmares, and panic. Some are later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can interfere with daily routines and relationships even years later.

Sleep Issues

Difficulty falling asleep and staying at rest is a reality for many veterans. Whether this is due to nightmares or just not being able to regulate their nervous systems, it can be a difficult situation to manage without professional help.

Identity Shifts After Leaving Active Duty

Giving up the clarity, purpose, and structure found in the military can make finding a new path forward feel complicated for military personnel. When close bonds and routines disappear, veterans may feel a bit lost and unsure about what to do in their next phase of life.

Substance Abuse Issues

Some veterans develop substance use disorders as a way of coping with difficult memories, chronic pain, or feelings of isolation. Relying on alcohol or other substances might start as a way to numb anxiety or fall asleep, but can quickly turn into a cycle that is hard to break. Recovery often means reaching out to specialized professionals and connecting with support groups and peer support—both in-person and online—to get the help they need.

Facing Stigma When Seeking Mental Health Care

Veterans sometimes put off treatment due to feeling ashamed or lonely, believing that nobody will fully grasp what they’ve experienced. Social stigma, both inside and outside their military life, can amplify the struggle of making that first call for help.

Veterans, their loved ones, and caregivers can benefit from having honest conversations about the struggles people face after leaving the military. If you need more information or are concerned about your wellness, you can also contact the Veterans Crisis Line.

VA Healthcare vs. TRICARE: What Veterans Need to Know

Healthcare options for veterans and their families can be confusing, especially when looking for the right psychiatric or mental health services. Understanding the differences can guide you to TRICARE or VA benefits that fit your situation.

What Is VA Healthcare?

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is funded directly by the federal government and provides medical services to veterans. VA health care eligibility is generally based on a veteran’s military service and discharge status. Service-connected disabilities and income levels affect priority groups, costs, and access to care.

VA Healthcare includes routine doctor’s visits, medication, mental health care, and more. Veterans must enroll in VA health care, after which appointment availability and processing times may affect how quickly care begins. Depending on a veteran’s priority group, income, and service-connected status, VA health care may involve little to no cost, though some services require copayments.

You can always visit the VA website at VA.gov for more information.

How TRICARE Works for Military Members

TRICARE is a separate health benefit program for active-duty service members and their families, as well as military retirees – most commonly those with 20 years of service, but also some who retire earlier due to medical reasons or Reserve service.

Covering everything from routine care to specialty medicine, TRICARE operates more like private insurance, with several plan options based on status and location. Active military use it as their primary insurance, while retired service members often convert to different TRICARE plans as part of their retirement.

The Importance of Checking Your Coverage

Not every program covers every service in the same way or at the same location. Knowing if you qualify for VA Healthcare or are still using TRICARE ensures that your first appointment, prescriptions, and ongoing therapy and psychiatry bills don’t bring surprises. Some private medical centers accept TRICARE, while VA hospitals have their own VA mental health and behavioral health specialists. Waiting to check until after seeking care could slow down access to necessary support.

Some veterans are eligible for both VA health care and TRICARE, and the two programs can be used alongside each other depending on the type of care needed.

Who Administers TRICARE in Your Region?

TRICARE doesn’t always look the same in every area of the country. The organization handling your care can change how you schedule appointments, obtain referrals, or handle authorizations. Here’s what veterans in Chicago and Orlando need to know.

TRICARE Administration in Chicago

As of now, TriWest Healthcare Alliance will be taking over management of the TRICARE program in the Chicago region. This transition officially started in early 2025. Veterans and families may notice some shifts as TriWest rolls out new contact numbers, updates the health care provider directory, or adjusts referral policies.

TRICARE Administration in Orlando

If you live in Orlando, Humana Military is in charge of TRICARE benefits. Each private company working with TRICARE may set different protocols, so how referrals or claims work in Orlando depends on the plan you are enrolled in.

Psychiatric Treatment Options for Veterans

Veterans deserve care that addresses both visible and invisible wounds. Specialized mental health support helps many veterans regain control and develop healthier coping skills. Several types of psychiatric care are available at our clinic.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluations

A thorough evaluation allows our psychiatrist to learn about a veteran’s history, current symptoms, and past treatment experiences. Understanding each detail makes it easier to build a treatment plan that fits the person’s specific mental health condition.

Medication Management When Appropriate

Some conditions respond best to medication. Medication management involves careful selection, education about side effects, and periodic follow-ups to ensure everything is on track.

Non-Medication Mental Health Treatments for Veterans

There are various types of mental health care available for veterans that don’t involve medications. Common ones include:

Traditional “Talk Therapy”

Sometimes called counseling or psychotherapy, talk therapy offers a safe place to share memories, worries, and ongoing struggles. Therapists may use approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps identify and reshape negative thought patterns that lead to anxiety or depression.

Exposure therapy focuses on working through trauma-related memories carefully, while Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) emphasizes building emotion regulation and healthy coping skills. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) aims to help people accept their experiences but stay focused on the values and activities that matter most.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

This therapy is often used for those who have lingering symptoms from trauma or PTSD. EMDR combines guided eye movements with recalling difficult memories, helping veterans “reprocess” the past so it feels less overwhelming today.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

This treatment uses gentle, targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific parts of the brain. Some veterans find TMS helpful when medications or talk therapy alone were not enough.

Exomind TMS for Advanced Neuromodulation Support

Exomind customizes TMS to an individual’s needs, making each session as effective as possible. Enhanced targeting sets this service apart for veterans seeking a more controlled treatment option.

If you’re looking for treatment and want to improve your overall wellbeing, there are many options available.
