Luxury Psychiatry Clinic accepts TRICARE insurance plans in both Illinois and Florida

At our Chicago clinic, Luxury Psychiatry Clinic is proud to serve military families and individuals enrolled in TRICARE by offering comprehensive outpatient psychiatry and behavioral health services. Whether you need a psychiatric evaluation, ongoing medication management, or mental health care for a mental health condition, we provide treatment that is based on respected, evidence-based practices provided by TRICARE-eligible clinicians (when in-network).

We coordinate every patient’s treatment plan with military culture and needs in mind, providing both in-person visits and telepsychiatry services and following TRICARE guidelines for access and coverage. Military members and their families rely on care that recognizes the stresses of service life–that’s why our approach is not only evidence-driven but also truly patient-centered, delivering treatment as part of a collaborative, trusted partnership.

What Is TRICARE?

TRICARE is the official health care program for individuals with close ties to the U.S. military system, providing government-backed coverage nationwide. Eligible groups primarily include:

  • Active-duty service members
  • Retired military members
  • Spouses and dependent children covered under their sponsor’s military benefits

TRICARE operations and requirements vary slightly depending on your region. In Chicago, network access and referrals adhere to guidelines set by the regional managing partner. TRICARE covers a variety of outpatient mental health needs, such as medication management and psychiatric evaluations, from providers and clinics that meet TRICARE participation and credentialing requirements.

Who Isn’t Eligible For TRICARE?

TRICARE provides valuable coverage for many military-connected families, but not all veterans will qualify. Here are the main groups of veterans who are generally not eligible for TRICARE coverage:

Veterans Who Left Before Retirement

If you separated from active-duty service before qualifying for retirement (typically without finishing 20 years of active-duty service), you are not eligible for TRICARE as a retiree.

Discharge Status Less than Retirement

Veterans who received a discharge other than for retirement, even if it’s an honorable discharge, are usually not granted TRICARE eligibility. TRICARE is tied to specific military retirement criteria, not simply “good” service, so honorable discharge alone is not enough.

Non-Retired Guard and Reserve Members

Members of the National Guard or the Reserve are subject to special rules. If Guard or Reserve service ended without achieving military retirement, TRICARE options generally lapse at separation.

Veteran Status Alone

Having “veteran” status does not make one eligible for TRICARE. To retain access as a retiree, advanced eligibility (usually 20 years of qualifying service) or medically related retirement is typically required.

Some service members can qualify for TRICARE coverage without completing 20 years if they are medically retired due to a service-connected disability or are placed on the Permanent or Temporary Disability Retired List (PDRL or TDRL).

If you aren’t sure about eligibility or what health care services you need or are entitled to, our experienced team will walk you through how TRICARE connects military members and their families with essential outpatient mental health resources in Chicago.

TRICARE vs. VA Health Care

TRICARE and VA health care are two separate programs with different eligibility rules and benefits. In some cases, a veteran may be eligible for both TRICARE and VA benefits, depending on their particular service record. Because coverage varies, it’s important for patients to confirm which program applies to their situation before scheduling any mental health appointment.

TRICARE Administration by Region

TRICARE health coverage is managed by private companies, called regional contractors, depending on your location in the U.S. It’s critical to know which contractor manages your care, because network participation, authorizations, and claims may differ.

TriWest – TRICARE in the Western Region

In 2025, Chicago became part of the TRICARE Western Region, which is administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. TriWest manages the local provider networks and handles approvals for treatment, authorizations, and referrals when required by health plan rules.

The company is also responsible for processing claims and coordinating care between clinics, patients, and military agencies. Before scheduling behavioral or psychiatric health appointments in Chicago, patients must confirm that their provider is part of the TriWest-administered care and is in-network to ensure benefit coverage.

Humana Military – TRICARE in the Eastern Region

Meanwhile, locations managed in the Eastern Region, such as Orlando, still have their TRICARE benefits administered by Humana Military. Humana oversees the local network providers, benefit approvals, and coverage support in this region.

Using TRICARE and Medicare Together

Some veterans wonder what happens to their TRICARE coverage once they turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare. To keep TRICARE coverage at this point, you must enroll in both Medicare Part A and Part B. Medicare is your primary health insurance plan: it pays first on medical bills, while TRICARE picks up the remaining copays and deductibles.

Psychiatric and Mental Health Services for TRICARE Patients

Our clinic welcomes TRICARE patients in Chicago and beyond, offering a patient-centered approach to psychiatric and mental health care. From comprehensive assessments to routine outpatient support, our team supports TRICARE patients. Here’s what we offer:

Some of the non-medication services we offer include:

Psychiatric Evaluations

Full mental health assessments are provided to accurately diagnose and guide each patient’s care plan.

In-Person Psychiatry Appointments

Meet directly with a psychiatrist to discuss your treatment, recovery goals, and talk through mental health concerns.

Telepsychiatry Services

Secure online options make it easy to get evidence-based support from wherever you’re located, consistent with TRICARE coverage.

Ongoing Outpatient Mental Health Treatment

Work with experienced clinicians for psychotherapy to help you manage stress, anxiety, depression, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, other mood disorders, and everyday life transitions.

We use several approaches in individual therapy and family therapy, such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and other techniques to improve a patient’s overall self-esteem, mental health, and overall wellness.

If you think you need medication, we can help with that too by offering:

Medication Management

Our board-certified psychiatrists offer medication prescribing, monitoring, and ongoing medication updates – customized to your symptoms and covered by TRICARE.

Supervision and Follow-Up

Ongoing check-ins make adjustments easier and keep prescriptions both effective and safe in the long term.

TRICARE patients have treatment options at every level; whether you need therapy sessions, medication, or a blend of both, we stay by your side the whole way.
