Men’s Therapy Statistics

Historically, men have been far less likely than women to seek help for mental health issues, often due to stigma, cultural expectations around masculinity, and discomfort with vulnerability. However, this trend is beginning to shift. In recent years, more men are recognizing the value of therapy for men and prioritizing their mental health and well-being. The statistics below highlight this encouraging progress and underscore the growing importance of making safe spaces for men in both Chicago and nationwide.

  • Just 42% of men with a diagnosed mental health issue received treatment in 2022, a notable improvement over prior years.
  • In 2022, 16.3% of men received some form of mental health treatment, up from 12.1% in 2021 — a 35% year‑over‑year increase.
  • Nearly one in 10 men experiences depression or anxiety, but fewer than half seek treatment, highlighting both the need and increasing efforts.
  • Though historically, men die by suicide nearly four times more than women, rates of men seeking treatment are rising, underscoring both the urgency and hope in men choosing care.

These trends show that more men in Chicago, Illinois, and beyond are accessing therapy, armed with better tools to face unique challenges, reduce the impact of mental health issues, and improve well‑being. With effective therapies like CBT, EMDR, and ketamine treatments, we’re seeing momentum build across the community. At Luxury Psychiatry Clinic, we aim to continue contributing to this positive shift by offering accessible, inclusive, and stigma‑free support for men at every stage.

Why Is There a Stigma for Men?

The stigma surrounding mental health treatment for men is deeply rooted in longstanding cultural norms. From a young age, many boys are taught that vulnerability is a weakness and that they should handle life’s challenges on their own. Traditional ideas of masculinity often prize stoicism and emotional suppression, discouraging men from seeking help when struggling with mental health issues like anxiety, depression, or ADHD. This can lead to untreated symptoms, strained interpersonal relationships, and diminished overall well-being.

Fortunately, these outdated views are gradually changing. As more public figures speak openly about their own mental health journeys and as education increases, men are becoming more empowered to seek support. Clinics like Luxury Psychiatry Clinic in Chicago and Orlando are helping break this stigma by providing non-judgmental, supportive environments where men can embrace therapy as a tool for personal growth. By addressing unique challenges through evidence-based treatments such as CBT and EMDR, we help men rewrite the narrative around psychotherapy and prioritize their wellness without shame.
