What Is Aetna Better Health of Illinois?

Aetna Better Health of Illinois is a Medicaid health plan that provides comprehensive health care coverage to eligible individuals and families across Illinois. As part of the larger Aetna network, this plan focuses on improving overall well-being by covering essential services such as primary care, preventive care, behavioral health, and outpatient mental health services. For members, Aetna Better Health of Illinois helps reduce financial barriers to care by offering structured benefits with low or no copays, predictable deductibles, and access to in-network providers.

For mental health care specifically, Aetna Better Health of Illinois includes coverage for psychiatry, psychotherapy, psychiatric evaluations, and medication management when provided by qualified, in-network mental health professionals. This allows patients to receive evidence-based psychiatric care—either in person or through telehealth services—while staying within their insurance plan. By emphasizing coordinated care and long-term wellness, Aetna Better Health of Illinois supports members in managing mental health conditions, navigating life’s challenges, and maintaining a better quality of life through accessible, outpatient treatment options.

Aetna Better Health vs. Illinois Medicaid

Illinois Medicaid is the state-run health insurance program that provides coverage for eligible low-income individuals, families, seniors, and people with disabilities across Illinois. It establishes the baseline benefits—such as primary care, preventive care, behavioral health, and mental health services—but does not always directly manage how care is delivered. Instead, Illinois Medicaid often partners with managed care organizations to administer benefits, coordinate providers, and improve access to quality care.

Aetna Better Health of Illinois is one of those managed care plans operating under Illinois Medicaid. When enrolled in Aetna Better Health, members still receive Medicaid benefits, but through Aetna’s health plan structure. This typically means a defined in-network provider system, more coordinated care, and clearer pathways to services like outpatient psychiatry, medication management, psychotherapy, and telehealth mental health care. For patients, the key difference is not eligibility or core coverage—but how care is organized, accessed, and supported, especially when working with in-network mental health providers across Illinois.
