We’re proud to share that Dr. Michelle Dees, board-certified psychiatrist and founder of Luxury Psychiatry Clinic, was featured in Medical News Today’s March 2025 article, ADHD Linked to ‘Astonishing’ Reduction in Life Expectancy. The piece covers new research published in The British Journal of Psychiatry, which found that adults with ADHD live significantly shorter lives than those without the condition—an estimated 8.6 years shorter for women and nearly 7 years shorter for men.

The study, which analyzed data from more than 30,000 adults with ADHD in the United Kingdom, showed higher rates of co-occurring health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, epilepsy, substance misuse, and depression. Experts explained that the reduction in life expectancy is not due to ADHD itself, but rather to the ripple effects of unmet medical needs, health inequalities, and modifiable lifestyle risks.

Dr. Dees told Medical News Today that the high prevalence of anxiety and depression among people with ADHD creates a volatile situation, increasing the likelihood of self-harm, accidents, and other risky behaviors. She also highlighted how inaccessibility to essential health resources worsens outcomes, calling the nearly decade-long reduction in life expectancy “astonishing” and urging more cohesive systems of support. In addition, she emphasized the role of family and friends in fostering healthy communication, supporting stress management, and encouraging treatment adherence.

At Luxury Psychiatry Clinic, we share this commitment to proactive, whole-person ADHD care. Our services include comprehensive evaluations, personalized medication management, psychotherapy, and advanced treatments like TMS and Exomind® therapy. With locations in Chicago, IL and Orlando, FL, we provide patients with the tools and support they need to manage ADHD effectively and live healthier, fuller lives.

Dr. Dees’s feature in Medical News Today reinforces what we see every day: with timely diagnosis, proper treatment, and community support, ADHD does not have to define or shorten a person’s future.
