What is Depression?

Depression is a common but serious mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and functions in daily life. Often referred to clinically as major depressive disorder, depression goes beyond occasional sadness or low mood—it can cause persistent feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. People experiencing depression may struggle with difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite or sleep, fatigue, and even thoughts of self-harm. These symptoms of depression can vary in severity and duration, making it essential to seek professional evaluation and support.

There are several types of depression, including clinical depression, bipolar depression, and depression linked to substance use or medical conditions. The exact causes of depression are complex and may include genetics, brain chemistry, life events, and underlying mental illness. Effective care often involves a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle changes.

Types of Depression Diagnoses

The following subtypes of depression are formal diagnoses that demonstrate how depression is not a one-size-fits-all condition. Each diagnosis is characterized by certain symptoms and treatment options, although they all fall under the broader definition of depression. The types of depression are the following:

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

Also known as clinical depression, Major Depressive Disorder is one of the most common and severe forms of depression. Individuals with MDD often experience persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest in activities, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness that interfere with daily life. Treatment for MDD typically includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), talk therapy, and sometimes medication or advanced interventions like TMS or ketamine therapy, especially for treatment-resistant cases.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)

Dysthymia, also referred to as persistent depressive disorder or chronic depression, involves a long-term depressed mood lasting for two years or more. While symptoms may be less intense than MDD, they are enduring and can significantly impact self-esteem, relationships, and overall well-being. Individuals may feel “low” most of the time and struggle with productivity and motivation. Our depression therapists in Chicago work with clients to manage symptoms through a mix of psychotherapy and supportive care.

Manic Depression

Though an outdated term, manic depression typically refers to what is now called bipolar disorder. This condition involves extreme mood swings—from emotional highs (mania or hypomania) to deep lows (depression). During depressive episodes, individuals may exhibit classic symptoms of depression, while manic phases may involve impulsivity, racing thoughts, or risky behavior. Treating bipolar depression often requires a specialized approach, combining psychopharmacology, CBT, and close monitoring by mental health providers.

Bipolar Depression

A specific aspect of bipolar disorder, bipolar depression refers to the depressive episodes that occur between periods of mania or hypomania. These episodes can be especially debilitating, often leading to intense negative thoughts, sleep disturbances, and difficulty functioning. Our Chicago-based treatment center uses an evidence-based approach to stabilize mood through a tailored combination of psychotherapy, mood stabilizers, and routine check-ins.

Introjective vs. Anaclitic Depression

While both introjective and anaclitic depression aren’t necessarily considered depression diagnoses, these theoretical concepts help us understand how depression can develop from early experiences and how the condition can manifest during adult life.

Introjective depression is rooted in internal conflict and self-evaluation. Individuals experiencing this form often grapple with deep feelings of guilt, shame, worthlessness, and failure. It’s common among people with perfectionistic tendencies, and symptoms may include difficulty concentrating, harsh self-criticism, and a persistent sense of falling short of expectations. Treatment typically involves psychodynamic therapy or CBT to address negative self-perceptions and foster healthier thought patterns.

In contrast, anaclitic depression arises from relational disruptions—especially the loss of a loved one or emotional support figure. This form of depression is characterized by feelings of helplessness, loneliness, and dependency. Sufferers may feel abandoned or deeply anxious about being alone, making it harder to function in daily life. Talk therapy, particularly approaches that explore attachment and emotional regulation, can help rebuild a sense of security and autonomy.

Common Symptoms of Depression

Although there are many different forms of depression, when analyzing specific habits and behaviors, similar symptoms tend to appear. Recognizing the following signs can be key to understanding the type of depression diagnosis one struggles with:

It’s important to remember that there isn’t a checklist of symptoms one needs to hit to be considered depressed. A person with depression may have all, none, or some of the above symptoms. What’s important is seeking professional help and getting a formal diagnosis so that you can learn what treatment options might be best for you.
