Most people feel some nerves before a presentation or walking into a room where they don’t know anyone. But for some, the anxiety feels out of control, and even ordinary social situations become something much harder to manage. People with social anxiety disorder often have difficulty with everyday activities and tasks, like work meetings, dates, parties, eating in public, making eye contact, and speaking in front of others, with the dread starting days before any of these things actually occur.
There’s a difference between occasional nervousness and a persistent and overwhelming fear of social situations that starts shaping your decisions. When anxiety causes you to turn down opportunities, avoid people you’d like to know, or stay quiet when you have something to say, it’s affecting your daily life in ways that deserve real support.

Social anxiety disorder is more than ordinary nervousness or shyness. It involves persistent fear or anxiety about situations where a person believes they may be watched, judged, embarrassed, or evaluated negatively by others. One of the reasons social anxiety tends to persist, and even grow, is that people often avoid these situations altogether.
Over time, that avoidance reinforces the belief that the situation was genuinely dangerous and that you couldn’t have handled it, which makes the next opportunity feel even harder. The relief is real, but so is the cost. Left untreated, social anxiety can affect school performance, career growth, relationships, independence, and overall well-being.
No, though the two are often confused. Shyness is a normal personality trait, and being shy doesn’t mean someone has a mental health condition. Plenty of shy people feel some discomfort in social settings while still functioning comfortably because they don’t have a diagnosable social phobia. They attend the event or give the presentation, and simply find it more draining than an outgoing person might. Social anxiety disorder generally involves more intense fear, more avoidance, and greater distress or impairment.
Symptoms of social anxiety disorder can be emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physical.
Some people also turn to alcohol or other substances to cope with social anxiety. Over time, this can contribute to substance abuse or other mental health concerns.
Symptoms vary considerably from person to person. Some people experience more of these symptoms than others, and some might experience many physical symptoms but fewer emotional or cognitive symptoms, for example.
Social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are both anxiety disorders, but they center on different things.
With social anxiety disorder, the anxiety focuses primarily on social scrutiny, like being watched, judged, embarrassed, or evaluated negatively by other people. The worry tends to attach to interactions and situations where other people are present.
With generalized anxiety disorder, the worry spreads across multiple areas of life, often including work, health, family, finances, responsibilities, and everyday concerns. It isn’t tied specifically to social evaluation, and it often persists whether or not anyone else is involved.
It’s entirely possible to have both, and many people do. Because symptoms overlap with each other and with other mental health conditions, a proper assessment is important to make sure you’re getting the appropriate mental health treatment.
Social anxiety disorder treatment is individualized, but there are common treatments that are used for patients. These often include:
Cognitive behavioral therapy helps people identify the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behavior. In social anxiety treatment, much of the work involves examining automatic negative thoughts that come up around social situations.
This might be thoughts about people judging you, embarrassing yourself, or looking nervous and being noticed by other people. These thoughts often feel like facts in the moment. CBT helps you learn to test and reframe them, develop practical coping skills, and gradually practice new ways of responding to situations you’ve been avoiding.
Exposure therapy involves gradual, planned practice with feared social situations. It does not mean being pushed into your worst fear immediately. Instead, exposure progresses in manageable steps, which might move from making brief eye contact, to asking someone a question, to starting a conversation, to attending a small gathering, to eventually speaking in front of others.
Exposure progresses gradually, with feared situations practiced in manageable steps over time. Repeated exposure can reduce avoidance and build confidence in your ability to handle anxiety rather than escape it.
Mindfulness-based approaches help you notice anxious thoughts without automatically reacting to them. Techniques focused on grounding and present-moment attention can be especially useful for social anxiety, where a great deal of distress comes from self-monitoring, like mentally watching and critiquing yourself during a conversation rather than being in it. These strategies work best as part of a broader treatment plan rather than on their own.
Medication may be considered depending on your symptoms, diagnosis, health history, and personal preferences. SSRIs and SNRIs are commonly used for persistent social anxiety, and other medications may be appropriate in certain situations.
When you come to Luxury Psychiatry Clinic for social anxiety treatment, we start by understanding your specific situation before recommending anything. Social anxiety has common symptoms, but everyone experiences them differently. Here’s what our process looks like:
The first thing our providers do is a clinical assessment. We talk to you about what’s going on and what kind of problems your anxiety is creating for you. We want to get a clear picture of how it’s affecting your life. We’ll also go through your mental health and treatment history to get a better overview of whether you’re dealing with other mental health conditions and if you’ve tried other treatments before.
Once we do an initial assessment, we can help you set achievable goals. For some people, that might include going to parties more often, being able to speak up at work meetings, volunteering to do a presentation, or anything else that they’re not able to do because of their anxiety.
Based on your goals and your needs, we will create your treatment plan. There are many different types of interventions we can use, which might include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, mindfulness, psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of these and other approaches.
At this point, sessions can begin, and you can focus on learning coping skills and challenging any negative thought patterns that are preventing you from engaging in activities you’d like to participate in. We will regularly review your progress and collaborate with you to make changes as needed.
Eligible patients may be able to engage in some of this work via Telehealth, so make sure to ask us about it if that’s something you’re interested in.
